March’s featured photographer is Bénédicte Desrus

Bénédicte Desrus is a French documentary photographer based in Mexico and working worldwide.

Her work is distributed by Sipa USA agency in New York. She is a member of Women Photograph and The Luupe. She has worked throughout Europe, East Africa and the Americas.

She focuses on social and human-rights issues around the world. Her long-term photo projects explore the lives of people ostracized by society, and the communities they form to survive and find respect. Recent stories explored the lives of elderly sex workers living in a shelter in Mexico City, the persecution of homosexuals in Uganda, the killing of albinos in Tanzania and the global obesity epidemic.

Las Amazonas de Yaxunah

The Amazonas of Yaxunah is an indigenous women’s softball team from the Maya community of Yaxunah in Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula. The team of 26 players, aged 13 to 62, was formed in 2019. The Amazonas have become famous in Mexico for playing barefoot and wearing traditional Mayan dresses known as “huipiles”, but also for defying gender inequality. Playing sports isn’t considered part of a woman’s life in traditional Maya culture but they have found empowerment through sport. The Amazonas have travelled around the country to compete against established teams, even playing in the Kukulcán Alamo Park stadium in Mérida, home of Major League side, Los Leones de Yucatán. They started off with little more than a makeshift bat carved from a piece of wood and a single borrowed baseball. But now they are invited across the country to entertain crowds filled with their growing local and international fan base, sometimes numbering in the thousands. In September 2023, they even played their first ever game abroad in Phoenix, Arizona.

La fotógrafa del mes de marzo Bénédicte Desrus

Bénédicte Desrus es una fotógrafa documental reconocida con varios premios, reside actualmente en la Ciudad de México. Su trabajo está distribuido por la agencia Sipa Press USA y ha realizado proyectos en Europa, África del Este, Estados Unidos y América Latina.

Su trabajo se centra en asuntos sociales y humanos, y a través de sus imágenes revela la vida de las personas marginadas por la sociedad en el mundo.

Ha desarrollado proyectos documentales que exploran temas como la obesidad a nivel global, la persecución contra los homosexuales en Uganda, y la matanza de albinos en Tanzania, entre otros.

Bénédicte es co-autora del libro Las amorosas más bravas, producto de un trabajo de ocho años que documenta la cotidianidad de las trabajadoras sexuales de la tercera edad, habitantes del albergue Casa Xochiquetzal, en la Ciudad de México.

Las Amazonas de Yaxunah

Las Amazonas de Yaxunah es un equipo de softbol femenino indígena de la comunidad maya de Yaxunah en la península de Yucatán en México. El equipo de 26 jugadoras, de entre 13 y 62 años, se formó en 2019. Las Amazonas se han hecho famosas en México por jugar descalzas y vestir vestidos tradicionales mayas conocidos como “huipiles”, pero también por desafiar la desigualdad de género. Practicar deportes no se considera parte de la vida de una mujer en la cultura tradicional maya, pero han encontrado empoderamiento a través del deporte. Los Amazonas han viajado por todo el país para competir contra equipos establecidos, incluso jugando en el estadio Kukulcán Álamo Park en Mérida, sede del equipo de Grandes Ligas, Los Leones de Yucatán.

Comenzaron con poco más que un bate improvisado tallado en un trozo de madera y una pelota de béisbol prestada, pero ahora están invitadas en todo el país para entretener a multitudes llenas de su creciente base de fanáticos locales e internacionales, a veces de miles. En septiembre de 2023 jugaron su primer partido en el extranjero en Phoenix, Arizona.
