January’s featured photographer is Fabiola Cedillo

Fabiola Cedillo Crespo is a twenty-eight year old Ecuadorian sculptor and photographer. She is currently studying psychology as part of a long distance course. In 2013 she completed her Masters in Photography at the Escuela Blank Paper in Madrid. In the same year she was one of the photographers selected for the PA-TA-TA 2013 Festival in Granada, the same festival for which, in 2015, she was selected as one of the emerging photographers to be included in the book Presentes-Futuros (Presents-Futures). She was selected by Patry Remy to participate in a residency at the Festival de Photographie de Deauville and the exhibition of work at La jourèe at “PLANCHE(s) CONTACT ” in 2013, France. Her work was selected for the photography festival, Encontros da Imagen in Braga. She was also a finalist for the PRIX LE BAL of Talents jeunes creation photographique in 2013, France. Last year she won the 2015 Fondos Concursables in Plastic Arts at the Ministry of Culture and Heritage of Ecuador. Through this prize she has made her first self-publication, the book, Los mundos de Tita.

Los mundos de Tita

This project was created during the year 2013. My older sister Tita is the protagonist of this work. However, it could be any of us. Tita appears in some of the photographs, she is also the author of the drawings that are part of this project. Every picture open doors, where we can enter and exit different places; it is a passage through different emotional and sensory states.

Foto Féminas: Will you continue to work on your project, Los mundos de Tita?

Fabiola Cedillo: Yes, but I will not do more photographs for this project, have already resulted in a book. What currently interests me is continuing with other languages, using different media that could develop projects and elevate them so they transform into something beyond personal artistic expression. My aim is to call attention to those necessities which are not thought about, let alone provided for people with an intellectual deficit in my country and I imagine throughout the rest of Latin America. Personally it’s something that concerns me when looking toward the future.

F.F:What do you look to explore within your photographic projects?

F.C:I don’t have a concrete answer for this question.

I photograph what I live, what touches me, whether this “touch” is a caress or a blow. However if I feel indifferent to something I let this pass me by.

I let myself perform unconsciously, later I know that little by little the important things will become relevant and out of this a project will be born. This is exactly when I will know what I was exploring in those moments.

F.F: You’re a sculptor and a photographer. Do you aim to explore these fields within one project?

F.C: I’ve spent several years jumping from here to there; what I haven’t had the opportunity to do is work in a fixed studio where I can dedicate time to sculpture. With photography it has been different, I can carry the camera in a backpack and with luck, I will find film almost everywhere I go. This permanent contact is what makes me feel closer to photography than anything else. I’m sure in the future these two areas of media will be present in my projects. I’m also interested in video, installation, painting and the presence of these in the streets, outside of gallery and formal spaces, in an ephemeral manner. I like to play with this a little.

La fotógrafa del mes de Enero es Fabiola Cedillo

Fabiola Cedillo Crespo, tiene 28 años, es escultora y fotógrafa ecuatoriana. Actualmente esta cursando estudios en Psicología a distancia. En el 2013 Finalizo el Master de Fotografía en la Escuela Blank Paper, Madrid. En el mismo años fue una de los fotógrafos seleccionados el festival de Granada PA-TA-TA 2013, Festival que en el 2015 la selecciona com una de las fotografas emergentes para ser parte de el libro “Presentes-Futuros”. Fue seleccionada por Patry Remy para participar en la residencia del Festival de Photographie de Deauville y exposición del trabajo “La jourèe” en “PLANCHE(s)CONTACT 2013” en Francia. Es una de las seleccionada para el festival de Fotografía “Encontros da imagen” en Braga, asi como finalista de los “PRIX LE BAL of Talents jeunes creation photographique 2013”. Francia. El año pasado fue Ganadora de los “Fondos Concursables 2015″ de Artes plásticas del Ministerio de Cultura y Patrimonio de Ecuador, con este premio ha realizado su primera autopublicacion, el libro “Los mundos de Tita”.

Los mundos de Tita 

Este proyecto nace en el 2013, la protagonista es Tita, mi hermana mayor. Sin embargo, podríamos ser cualquiera de nosotros. Tita, ademas de salir en algunas de las fotografías, ella es la autora de los dibujos que también son parte del proyecto. Cada imagen nos abre puertas, donde constantemente entramos y salimos de lugares, es un paseo por diferentes estados emocionales y sensoriales.

Foto Féminas: ¿Continuarás trabajando en tu proyecto, Los mundos de Tita?

Fabiola Cedillo: Si, pero no haré m[as fotografías para este proyecto, las que tengo ya ha dado como resultado un libro. Lo que me interesa ahora es continuar con otros lenguajes, utilizar diferentes medios que sean de apoyo al proyecto y den paso a que este se transforme en algo mas que una expresión artística personal. Mi intensión es llamar la atención sobre necesidades que no están ni pensadas, mucho menos cubiertas para las personas con deficit intelectual en mi país, como imagino, en el resto de Latinoamérica. Personalmente es algo que me procura mucho mirando hacia el futuro.

F.F: ¿Qué buscas explorar en tus proyectos fotográficos?

F.C: No tengo una respuesta concreta para esta pregunta.

Fotografío lo que vivo, lo que me toca, sea este “toque” una caricia o un golpe, pero si me es indiferentes, pasa de largo. Dejo actuar al inconsciente, luego se que poco a poco las cosas importantes tomaran relevancia y nacerá un proyecto, justamente ahí es cuando sabré que es lo que estaba explorando en esos momentos.

F.F: Eres escultora y fotógrafa. ¿Buscas explorar estos dos medios juntos en un solo
proyecto?

Llevo algunos años saltando por aquí y por allá, con lo cual no he tenido la oportunidad de tener un taller fijo en el cual dedicarle tiempo a la escultura; con la fotografía ha sido diferentes, la cámara la puedo llevar en una mochila, y con suerte encuentro película casi en todas partes, este contacto permanente es el que me hace sentir mas fotógrafa que otra cosa. Estoy segura que en un futuro estos dos planos estarán presentes en mis proyectos. También me interesa el video, la instalación, la pintura y la presencia de estos en las calles, fuera de espacios galerísticos y formales, de manera efímera. Jugar un poco .
