February’s featured photographer is Sara Escobar

Sara Escobar is a documentary photographer born in Mexico, in 1984. Her photographic and video work focuses on issues of identity, social justice and human rights in Latin America.

Escobar holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Communication Sciences and a Master’s Degree in Documentary Cinema from the National Autonomous University of Mexico. In 2007, participated in the International Photo-journalism Workshop of the José Martí International Institute of Journalism in Havana, Cuba. She was part of the Contemporary Photography Seminar of the Image Center in 2013.

She has attended workshops with Andrés Garay, Jon Lowenstein, Sebastian Liste, Christopher Morris, Keith Dannemiller, Emilio Morenatti, Darío López Mills, Eniac Martínez and Joao Moreira Salles. In addition, she is part of the Tortugas al Viento production company, where she has done photography and video works for different media such as; AJ +, National Geographic, MSNBC, Mitu, Revolution 3.0, Xinhua and RNW, among others, as well as for organisations like; the Commission of the Truth of the State of Guerrero, Greenpeace, GIZ and AMEXCID. Between 2005 and 2012, she worked in Milenio Diario, Milenio TV, Fremantlemedia, Canal 6 de Julio and Cámara de Diputados.

Escobar is currently part of the documentary group Dospasosabajo. Her first documentary “Causar Alta” received the José Rovirosa Award for Best Student Documentary 2014 and the Youth Collective Award in the medium-length category of the Santiago Álvarez in Memoriam Festival (Cuba) 2015. Her photographic work has been shown in collective exhibitions in different parts of the world.

Quedamos en el Aire (We are in the air)

After the earthquakes of September 2017 in Mexico, the abandonment became obvious in many of the affected areas, especially in the poorest ones such as; Ixtaltepec, Oaxaca. Avelina, Levit and Roberto talk after a few months the experience they had with the earthquake and the uncertainty regarding the future as inhabitants of this municipality where around ten people died and 80% of the houses suffered damages.

The initiative to carry out this project arose within the Colectivo Dospasosabajo, when some of its members went to the Isthmus and observed the situation in which Ixtaltepec was located. Media coverage had ended, but the deficiencies continued on location, and even increased with the passage of time. For that reason, the decision was made to make a short film in response of those affected so that they and others would relate what they were experiencing.

All the projects carried out within the Colectivo are independent and self-financed.

La fotógrafa del mes de Febrero es Sara Escobar

Sara Escobar, fotógrafa documental nacida en México, en 1984. Su trabajo fotográfico y de video se centra en temas de identidad, justicia social y derechos humanos en América Latina.

Realiza la Licenciatura en Ciencias de la Comunicación y la Maestría en Cine Documental en la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México. Participa en el 2007 en el Taller Internacional de Foto-periodismo del Instituto Internacional de Periodismo José Martí en La Habana, Cuba. Formó parte del Seminario de Fotografía Contemporánea del Centro de la Imagen en 2013. Ha cursado talleres con Andrés Garay, Jon Lowenstein, Sebastian Liste, Christopher Morris, Keith Dannemiller, Emilio Morenatti, Darío López Mills, Eniac Martínez y Joao Moreira Salles.

Es parte de la productora Tortugas al Viento, en la que he realizado trabajos de fotografía y video para distintos medios como AJ+, National Geographic, MSNBC, Mitú, Revolución 3.0, Xinhua y RNW, entre otros, así como para organizaciones como la Comisión de la Verdad del Estado de Guerrero, Greenpeace, GIZ y AMEXCID.

Entre el 2005 y 2012, trabajó en Milenio Diario, Milenio TV, Fremantlemedia, Canal 6 de Julio y Cámara de Diputados.

Actualmente forma parte del colectivo documental Dospasosabajo. Su primer documental “Causar Alta” recibió el Premio José Rovirosa al Mejor Documental Estudiantil 2014 y el Premio a Colectivo Joven en la categoría de mediometraje del Festival Santiago Álvarez in Memoriam (Cuba) 2015.

Su trabajo fotográfico ha sido mostrado en exposiciones colectivas en distintas partes del mundo.
