April’s featured photographer is Azahara Gómez
Currently lives between Mexico and Spain.
Her educational background is in art history and photography, she obtained her degree at the Sorbonne in Paris. Azahara went from learning about theory, to practice and vice-versa.
After working for several years at the Magnum agency in Paris on exhibition projects and editing, she began to develop her own projects. One of these projects led her to Mexico, where she now currently lives.
Azahara;s time is divided between collaborations with magazines, giving workshops, and carrying out her own projects. The series Searching for Marcos was exhibited in collaboration with associations defending human rights throughout several cultural centres in Mexico, among them is the UNAM. This series was also selected for PhotoEspaña’s 2014 Discovery Prize and was published in the French magazine Art Press, in September 2014. The project, DF, Fin del mundo (DF, End of the World), based on the novel by R. Bolaño, was selected by Nexofoto and will be exhibited at the end of 2017 in various cultural and theatrical spaces in France.
La Playa (The Beach) will be part of the XVII photography Biennale at the Centro de La Imagen (Image Centre) in DF, Mexico.

“The ruin is the secret soul of all constructions”, R. SMITHSON, 1972.
La Playa is an abandoned hotel in the city of Juárez, Mexico. During the years of violence, which shook this region, the federal police settled there.
Photography seems to impress upon us and inform us of a reality, but to me it has always exceeded this. In this project, it is not solely about a history or a documental search; it is about giving form to a poetic, political and social event.
The hotel has 123 rooms, all of which look the same but seem different.
It’s almost as if it centres around archaeology, all of the hotel’s rooms, in a way, seem like small theatres, setting us a scene of reality. The reality of a city, of a history, of a civilization, what remains in that place, what remains of ourselves. Juárez City, because of its history, has been converted into a myth, a place of mythology, of borders, of glamorous years filled with louche movie stars, of violence, femicide, of no man’s land… The reality of Juárez City is that it doesn’t just relate to Mexico. I firmly believe it relates to global politics, an economic world, a changing and unequal society with challenges to face.
With this project I wanted to work on Juárez City, moving away from images that we already know, from the idea of the exceptional and the local. Questioning this is what remains, the temporality, the challenges, the absences, through the architecture of a hotel that by definition is a place of passing and not of permanence. I am looking for the point between memory and what is forgotten.
This project will be exhibited at the XVII Photography Biennale in Mexico.

Actualmente vive entre México y España.
La formación de Azahara es en historia del arte/fotografía en la Sorbona en París donde estudia la carrera. Pasando de la teoría a la practica y vice-versa. Después de trabajar varios años en la Agencia Magnum Paris en proyectos expositivos y de edición empieza a desarrollar proyectos propios.
Uno de sus proyectos la lleva a México dónde vive actualmente. Su tiempo se divide entre colaboraciones con revistas, impartiendo talleres y llevando a cabo sus proyectos.
La serie Buscando a Marcos fue expuesta en colaboración con asociaciones de defensa de los derechos humanos en diferentes centros culturales en México, entre ellos la UNAM esta serie también fue seleccionada para el premio descubrimiento PHotoEspaña 2014, y se publicó en la revista francesa Art Press de septiembre 2014. El proyecto DF, Fin del mundo, basado en la novela de R.Bolaño , fue seleccionado por Nexofoto y se expondrá a lo largo del 2017 en varios espacios culturales y teatrales en Francia.
La Playa será parte de la XVII Bienal de la fotografía del centro de la Imagen en DF.

La Playa es un hotel abandonado en Ciudad Juárez, México. Durante los años de violencia que sacudieron esta región, la policía federal se instaló en el. La fotografía parece sellar e informar de una realidad, pero a mi parecer siempre la sobrepasa. En este proyecto, no se trata solamente de una historia o de una búsqueda documental, se trata de dar forma a un compromiso poético, político y social.
Un hotel de 123 habitaciones, todas las habitaciones parecen la misma, todas parecen diferentes.
Como si se tratase de arqueología, todas las habitaciones de este hotel a la manera de pequeños teatros parecen darnos una puesta en escena de la realidad. La realidad de una ciudad, de una historia, de una civilización, de lo que queda de un lugar, de lo que queda de nosotros mismos. Ciudad Juárez, por su historia, se ha convertido a mi parecer en un mito, lugar de mitología, de frontera, de años glamurosos para estrellas de cine canallas, de violencia, de feminicidio, de tierra nadie…. La realidad de Ciudad Juárez, no abarca únicamente la realidad mexicana local, sino, creo firmemente, la de una política global, una economía mundial, una sociedad cambiante, desigual y con retos que afrontar.
Con este proyecto quería trabajar sobre Ciudad Juárez, alejándome de las imágenes que ya conocemos, de la idea de lo excepcional y de lo local. Cuestionando que es lo que permanece, la temporalidad, los restos, las ausencias, a través de la arquitectura de un hotel que por definición es un lugar de paso y de no permanencia. Buscando el punto medio entre la memoria y el olvido.
