Chilean portrait and documentary photographer focused on social and cultural issues. Hevia is currently based between Chile and San Francisco, CA.

Hevia is interested in pursuing the issues and formal concerns of photography not only as an expression of her own inner vision, but also as a language to explore new realities, tell stories, and communicate narratives that usually are not represented in mainstream society and media.

I followed the charming Hugo Küschel; the oldest man in my grandparents’ village of Las Cascadas, Chile. The project portrays the last year of Hugo’s life, the relationship with his wife, Wilma, and his battle against ageing and memory loss.

Hugo was often confused by the most familiar of things. He had clear memories of his teenage years in the Navy, but sometimes forgot the name of his wife, Wilma. It was comforting to watch Hugo laugh off these mistakes. The Time I Have Left explores the point of view of a person who only had contact with the outside world peering out the windows, watching television and looking at old photographs. This project documents how Hugo created his own world in order to keep his precious remembrances alive.

Through this project, I intend to explore memory and time, and how these two concepts interact as they relate to mortality. At the same time, this project has become a means for me to return to my roots, and reconnect with the land where many of my early memories originated.

Hugo passed away on September 7, 2017, at the age of 96. This is his story.

The Time I Have Left

“Las brujas han dicho que viviré mucho tiempo. Tengo hasta el año 2013 o 2014. Viviré 107, 108, 109, 110 años. Todavía tengo mucho por hacer, mucho por delante … a veces estoy un poco cansado.”

Seguí al encantador Hugo Küschel; El hombre más viejo en el pueblo de mis abuelos de Las Cascadas, Chile. El proyecto retrata el último año de la vida de Hugo, la relación con su esposa, Wilma, y ​​su batalla contra el envejecimiento y la pérdida de la memoria.

Hugo se confunde a menudo por las cosas más familiares. Tenía recuerdos claros de su adolescencia en la Marina, pero a veces olvida el nombre de su esposa, Wilma.
