Marcela Bruna
Marcela Bruna is a photographer who lives and works in Santiago, Chile. She studied art at degree level, is a graduate in photographic journalism and advertising and has a diploma in practical and aesthetic photography. Bruna has been involved in national and international photographic workshops and festivals. She has worked as a photographer since 2006 within various strands of photography and now works freelance. She has shown her work in collective exhibitions in Chile, Argentina and Brazil. In addition, Marcela is part of the collective, Las Niñas (The Girls), since 2012, with whom she organizes FOCOM Encuentro de Mujeres Fotografas (FOCOM Meeting of Female Photographers).

At three months into the pregnancy they inform her that it will not be viable. The diagnosis: anencephaly. The majority of the foetuses who suffer from this complication die during birth, the ones who do survive pass away a few hours or days after they are born. Although Mónica wanted to prevent her pregnancy, she was unable to do so, subsequently having to carry out the pregnancy until the end despite all of the physical and psychological complications this presented. In Chile, since 1989 to the present day, all types of abortion are punishable by law. It is in this context Mónica waits until the day of the ‘birth-death’ after the long months used to plan “the day”, preoccupying oneself with the details, the coffin and the clothes. The girls were born on the 24th of March 2014; they lived for one hour.
* Today in Chile the idea to legislate a legal project that aims to de-penalize abortion has been approved based on three clauses: the unviability of the fetus, the risk of the mother’s health or conception through rape. Currently in thirty-four of the world’s countries, four of those in Latin America, abortion is still prohibited.
Interview with Marcela Bruna
Foto Femines: Why did you decide to begin this project?
At the beginning of 2013, along with the Las Niñas collective, we decided to develop a project centring on being a woman in a wider context, where each member could independently develop their ideas according to their own experiences. When talking about being a woman I felt it was necessary to touch on themes such as sexual and reproductive rights in Chile which from my point of view are no where nearly talked about enough. I wanted to focus my work on a pregnancy case which wasn’t viable due to the lack of access to therapeutic abortion. This is one of the rights that was taken away from us during the dictatorship which to this day have not been recuperated.
This idea led me to search for a woman who was going through this situation. It took almost a year for me to find someone until I finally came across Mónica’s case through in a website which discussed themes on health. I told her my idea and she agreed that I could accompany her through the process. At the time I knew that despite her already being diagnosed with the unviable pregnancy of twins, she still had to suffer the legal obligations and decided to carry out her pregnancy despite knowing her children would die on being born.
Have you published this project in Chile? Tell us a little about the public reaction on this theme?
Yes, part of the series has been exhibited in collective shows. During 2015 at el Centro Cultural de Quilicura (the Cultural Centre in Quilicura), at el Centro Cultural España (the Spanish Cultural Centre) and currently, until March this year, it is being exhibited at el Centro Cultural La Moneda (the Cultural Centre of La Moneda) in an exhibition which unites thirteen artists in one collective (Las Niñas).The people who have visited this exhibited series have commented on the harsh reality of Monica’s story. Furthermore, the project included a fairly polemical phrase stated by Jaime Guzmán, one of the minds behind the Constitution and who modified the abortion laws:
“The mother should have the child even if it is born abnormal, even if it is not wanted, even if it is the product of a rape or even if having it will result in its death”.
This phrase is very well known and countering it with the photographs helped to reflect upon the injustice of this law and its validity in this day and age.
You are part of the Las Niñas collective. Tell us a little about this collective, such as its objectives, how you collaborate as artists and if you collaborate with other artists?
The Las Niñas collective was realised at the beginning of 2012 with the principal aim of sharing experiences and developing communal photographic projects. Over time this led to the development of photography meetings where the aesthetics of these projects, made by women, could be discussed and to also give them a space for projects which touch on themes of gender. Thanks to this necessity FOCOM was created, Encuentro already has two editions and a third one planned for next year. This development has allowed us to relate to other artists with other disciplines and has generated unions which have allowed other projects to flower such as, Ofrendas fotográficas contra el femicidio (Photographic Offerings against Femicide). This project grew out of a meeting of two photographers who shared a discussion table at FOCOM and which subsequently brought together ten more photographers to work on the femincide project. As a collective we have also developed projects with other collectives such as Maria Ninguém, where we work alongside the Caja de Cartón (the Cardboard Box) (Chile) and Encontraste (México) during the Encuentro de Colectivos ECO (the Meeting of Collectives), in Brazil.

A los 3 meses de embarazo le informan que este no será viable. El diagnostico: anencefalia. La mayoría de los fetos que padecen esta malformación mueren durante el parto y los que sobreviven fallecen a pocas horas o días después de su nacimiento. Aunque Mónica quiera detener su embarazo no puede, debe llevarlo a termino a pesar de todas las complicaciones físicas y psicológicas que esto implica ,ya que en Chile esta penado por ley todo tipo de aborto desde el año 1989 hasta la fecha. En este escenario Mónica espera el dia del nacimiento-muerte, largos meses le dan tiempo para
planificar “el dia”, preocuparse de los detalles, del ataúd y la ropa. Las niñas nacieron el 24 de marzo del 2014, vivieron 1 hora.
*Hoy en Chile esta aprobada la idea de legislar un proyecto de ley que busca despenalizar el aborto en tres causales: inviabilidad del feto, riesgo para salud de la madre o violación. Por el momento sigue siendo uno de los 34 países del mundo y de los 4 de América Latina donde el aborto está prohibido en todos sus supuesto

Foto Feminas: ¿cómo decides empezar este proyecto?
Marcela Bruna: A comienzos del año 2013, junto al Colectivo Las Niñas, nos propusimos desarrollar un proyecto que tratara sobre el ser mujer en su más amplio contexto, donde cada integrante lo desarrollara de forma independiente según sus propias ideas y experiencias. Sentí que al hablar del ser mujer era necesario tocar el tema de los derechos sexuales y reproductivos en Chile, ya que bajo mi punto de vista existe una enorme deuda en esta materia. Quise enfocar mi trabajo en un caso de embarazo no viable, porque el acceso al aborto terapéutico es uno de los derechos que se nos quitó durante la dictadura y que hasta nuestros días no hemos podido recuperar.
Esta idea me llevó a buscar a una mujer que estuviera pasando por esta situación. Me tomó bastante tiempo encontrarla, casi un año, hasta que a través de un sitio de internet, en el que se discuten temas de salud, di con el caso de Mónica. Le conté mi idea y ella aceptó que la acompañara durante el proceso. Cuando la conocí ya le habían diagnosticado la inviabilidad de su embarazo gemelar, ella sintiéndose con la obligación legal decidió llevar su embarazo a término, aún sabiendo que sus hijas morirían al nacer.
F.F: ¿has publicado este proyecto en Chile? Háblanos un poco como ha sido la reacción del público sobre este tema
MB: Sí, parte de la serie se ha expuesto en muestras colectivas. Durante el 2015 en el Centro Cultural de Quilicura, en el Centro Cultural España y en estos momentos, hasta marzo de este año, se exhibe en el Centro Cultural La Moneda, en una muestra que reúne trabajos de 13 artistas y un colectivo (Las niñas)
Las personas que han visto la serie expuesta me han comentado lo crudo que les resulta el caso de Mónica. Además, el proyecto incluye una frase bastante polémica , cuyo autor es Jaime Guzmán, una de las cabezas que creó la Constitución y modificó la ley de aborto:
“La madre debe tener el hijo aunque éste salga anormal, aunque no lo haya deseado, aunque sea producto de una violación o aunque de tenerlo, derive su muerte” .
Esta frase es bastante reconocida y al contraponerla con las fotografías ayuda a reflexionar sobre lo injusta que puede ser la ley y su vigencia en el tiempo.
F.F: Eres parte del Colectivo Las Niñas. Háblanos un poco sobre este colectivo, como por ejemplo, cuál es su objetivo, colaboran como artistas, colaboran con otras artistas?
M.B: El colectivo Las Niñas nace a comienzos del año 2012, en un principio con el fin de compartir experiencias y desarrollar proyectos fotográficos en común, a lo que se sumó con el tiempo la idea de desarrollar un encuentro de fotografía donde se diera visualidad a proyectos fotográficos realizados por mujeres, y también dar espacio a proyectos que tocaran temáticas de género. Gracias a esta necesidad surge Focom, Encuentro que lleva 2 ediciones y una tercera en planes para el próximo año. Esta instancia nos ha permitido relacionarnos con artistas de otras disciplinas y ha generado uniones que han dado fruto en otros proyectos, como es el caso de Ofrendas fotográficas contra el femicidio, proyecto que surgió de la reunión de dos fotógrafas que compartieron en una mesa de conversación en Focom, y que luego convocaron a 10 fotógrafas más para trabajar en torno al femicidio. Como colectivo también hemos desarrollado proyectos con otros colectivos como es Maria Ninguém, donde trabajamos junto a Caja de Cartón (Chile) y Encontraste (México) durante el Encuentro de Colectivos E.co en Brasil.
