May’s featured photographer is Ana Espinal
Ana Espinal is a New York-based photographer. Born and raised in the Dominican Republic, Ana moved to New York City with her family as a teenager. Most recently, she has been working on a series of self-portraits investigating the intersection of femininity, identity and beauty. Ana is also exploring the ethnicity and physical characteristics of Dominican women. She received a BFA from School of Visual Arts in 2018, and AAS degree in Commercial Photography from CUNY, at LaGuardia College, in 2014.
A Part of Me
I use photography as a means to explore the everyday lives of women. I make images focusing on topics related to women’s issues, such as femininity, beauty standards, and body image. My vision is to create beautiful and provocative photographs and challenge viewers to engage more deeply with my work. I want to convey the hidden reality of the female body, the pain and the imperfections that are not openly talked about and remain invisible.
“A Part of Me” is an ongoing project I started at the beginning of 2019. This body of work focuses on the beauty of the female body and the importance of the menstrual cycle. Women around the world are frequently compelled to feel embarrassed during their period, and there is a sense of shame associated with sharing their menstrual experiences. My intention in this body of work is to show that menstruation is something natural – a part of the female essence as well as the cycle of life.

La fotógrafa del mes de Mayo es Ana Espinal
Ana Espinal es una fotógrafa dominicana que actualmente reside en Nueva York. Nació y creció en Santo Domingo, Republica Dominicana. Recibió una licenciatura en fotografía en School of Visual Arts, en Nueva York, 2018. También estudio fotografía comercial en CUNY, LaGuardia Community College, 2014. Hoy, su trabajo se centra en la serie de autorretratos que investiga la conexión de la feminidad, la identidad y lo estándares de belleza. Ana también está explorando el origen étnico y las características físicas de las mujeres dominicanas.
A Part of Me
Utilizo la fotografía como un medio para explorar la vida cotidiana de las mujeres. Me gusta crear imágenes que se enfocan en temas específicamente relacionados hacia la mujer, como la feminidad, los estándares de belleza y la imagen corporal. En cada uno de mis proyectos fotográficos, el objetivo es crear un conjunto de imágenes que sean visualmente hermosas, provocativas y que al mismo tiempo desafíen a las personas a interactuar más profundamente con ellas. Estoy interesada en revelar la intimidad del cuerpo femenino, el dolor y las imperfecciones de las que hoy en día no hablamos abiertamente y que permanece invisibles.
“Una Parte de Mi” es un proyecto en curso que comencé a principios de 2019. Este trabajo se enfoca en la belleza del cuerpo femenino y la importancia del ciclo menstrual. Las mujeres al rededor del mundo con frecuencia se ven obligadas a sentirse avergonzadas durante su período menstrual. Incluso, hay una sensación de timidez asociada con compartir sus experiencias menstruales. Mi intención en este proyecto es simplemente mostrar que la menstruación es algo natural y es parte de la esencia femenina, así como del ciclo de la vida.
