Jódete Cáncer
The series tells the story of Sandra, a 36-year-old survivor of breast cancer, who lost her breasts due to the disease, which was detected in early 2021.
After the diagnosis, the doctors explained to Sandra that it was necessary to do a double mastectomy because although the cancer was only in the right breast, if the left breast was left, the possibility of the disease returning was between 50 and 60 percent.
The doctors informed Sandra that her breasts could be reconstructed but that would imply at least two operations in the next three years, this procedure would have to be repeated at least every 10 years to change the implants. Reconstruction is not an easy process, many women have decided to live without breasts, as well as the physical, emotional and social challenges that the decision entails.
Sandra went into surgery on July 5, 2021, decided not to have her breasts reconstructed and created Jódete Cáncer (Fuck You Cancer), where she supports female breast cancer survivors who go through some type of mastectomy and choose not to have breast reconstruction.
Sandra decided to live without breasts in a system that equates breasts with femininity, to give her body a new meaning and thus exercise one of the first rights as a woman, which is freedom over her body, putting the oncological in first place before the aesthetic, plastic surgeons and oncologists promote breast reconstruction as a way for women to “feel whole again”.
“Breasts are not what makes us women.”
Sandra was shielded by this situation and today she openly shows her scars to tell other women, not only those who have gone through this terrible disease, that some breasts, a size or a measure do not define who you are, because beauty is more beyond the standards that society has set.
We should all feel equally proud of who we are and how we are.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), breast cancer is the most frequent malignant tumor among women in the world. In Mexico, it represents the first cause of death from cancer in women 18 women die daily from breast cancer.
Globally, breast cancer had the highest incidence in 2020, surpassing lung cancer.
The WHO points out that, in 2020, 2.3 million women were diagnosed with breast cancer worldwide, and 685,000 died from the disease.
