September’s featured photographer is Paola Jímenez

Paola Jiménez Quispe (1992) is a Peruvian visual artist based in Lima. Formed in photography at the Centro de la Imagen, she is interested in memory, loss and death using photography, video, archives and text. Her project Rules for Fighting won the Bird in Flight Prize 2020, Helsinki Photo Festival 2021, Female in Focus in 2021 and the Prix du Livre Images Vevey 2021/2022 Special Jury Prize. Her work has been exhibited in Lima, Tokyo, Helsinki, Kyiv, Buenos Aires, Riga, Miami, London and Vevey.

Rules for Fighting

Paola Jiménez Quispe was five years old when her father was murdered in 1998, found dead in his car. In 2015, the Peruvian photographer decides to confront this tragedy to finally mourn and forge her identity. She reconstructs piece by piece, like a puzzle, the life and murder of the one of which she has only a few memories. In the family home, the artist finds objects that his father had on him during the tragedy, alongside undeveloped film reels, video cassettes and a notebook. In this notebook, she discovers the Reglas para pelear, or eight rules that his father gives himself to solve with harmony love disputes. Jiménez Quispe appropriates these advice on dealing with his terrible family past. Taking its title from this intriguing handwritten page, the project in turn takes the form of a notebook, combining paternal notes, excerpts from the diary of his mother, family photos, video footage, newspaper pages and court documents.

Paola Jiménez Quispe (1992) es una fotógrafa peruana radicada en Lima. Formada en fotografía en el Centro de la Imagen de Lima, se interesa por la memoria, la pérdida y la muerte utilizando la fotografía, el vídeo, los archivos y el texto. Su proyecto Reglas para pelear ganó el premio Bird in Flight Prize 2020, Helsinki Photo Festival 2021, Female in Focus en 2021 y el Premio Especial del Jurado del Prix du Livre Images Vevey 2021/2022.  Su trabajo ha sido expuesto en Lima, Tokio, Helsinki, Kiev, Buenos Aires, Riga, Miami, Londres y Vevey. 

Reglas para Pelear

Paola Jiménez Quispe tenía cinco años cuando su padre fue asesinado en 1998, encontrado muerto en su automóvil. En 2015, la fotógrafa peruana decide enfrentar esta tragedia para finalmente llorar y forjar su identidad. Reconstruye pieza por pieza, como un rompecabezas, la vida y el asesinato de aquel del que sólo tiene unos pocos recuerdos. En la casa familiar, el artista encuentra objetos que su padre tenía consigo durante la tragedia, además de rollos de película sin revelar, videocasetes y una libreta. En este cuaderno descubre las Reglas para pelear, u ocho reglas que se da a sí mismo su padre para resolver con armonía las disputas amorosas. Jiménez Quispe se apropia de estos consejos para afrontar su terrible pasado familiar. Tomando su título de esta intrigante página manuscrita, el proyecto a su vez toma la forma de un cuaderno, combinando notas paternas, extractos del diario de su madre, fotos familiares, secuencias de video, páginas de periódicos y documentos judiciales.
