May’s featured photographer is Luciana L. Schütz

Luciana is an Argentinian born film director and photographer with interests towards art and fashion, deeply driven by a hybrid format. Her main area of interest has been always the visual language. She started from an early age to take several courses on analog photography and Super8 film. She graduated from the University of Buenos Aires as an Image and Sound Designer, with a specialisation in photography.

Her photographic work has been published in local and international magazines such as; Los Inrockuptibles (Arg), Lula (Japan), Der Greif (Germany), Intern (UK), Ignant Magazine (Germany), among others and exhibited in collective exhibitions at the Centro Cultural Recoleta (with Itaú Cultural support) and at MACA Museum at the XIV Visual Art’s Salon.

She has directed several short films that have been featured in international film festivals such as; BAFICI and FIDBA in its competitive section and selected by Berlinale Talents BA as director in 2018. In 2019, she attended Biographical-Documentary Theatre Course at UDK Berlin with Gudrun Herrbold and recently, she was selected to participate as jury at ELIA Academy 2021 (European League of Institutes of the Arts).

Nowadays, she is based in Brussels studying a Master’s degree in documentary film at LUCA School of Arts as a scholarship holder and working on different personal and commissioned projects.

Astroromántica

The photos that compose this project entitled Astroromántica are part of the behind the scenes of a video-installation created by Luciana Malavolta, both designer and protagonist of the piece. I intended to photograph the filming process by taking pictures of the surroundings and of the protagonist in the breaks and cuts between scenes.

Part of these landscapes are from the province of Mendoza, the mountainous area that collides with the Andes. This series of landscapes inspired me to think about the space, in inhabited places far away from civilization.The idea of having as a protagonist a woman dressed as an astronaut carrying a machine that represents the beating of her desire to travel through these territories transmits the idea of a sensitive, alternative, romantic heroine.

This version of black and white photographs is a work in progress mixing analogue and digital material from the expedition.

La fotógrafa del mes de Mayo es Luciana L. Schütz

Luciana es una directora de cine y fotógrafa nacida en Buenos Aires, Argentina con inclinaciones hacia el arte, profundamente inspirada por el formato híbrido mezclando documental y ficción. Su principal área de interés ha sido siempre el lenguaje visual. Desde muy temprana edad comenzó a tomar varios cursos de fotografía analógica y película Super8. Se graduó en la Universidad de Buenos Aires como Diseñadora de Imagen y Sonido, con especialización en fotografía.

Su trabajo fotográfico ha sido publicado en revistas locales e internacionales como Los Inrockuptibles (Arg), Lula (Japón), Der Greif (Alemania), Intern (Reino Unido), Ignant Magazine (Alemania), entre otras y expuesto en muestras colectivas en el Centro Cultural Recoleta (con apoyo de Itaú Cultural) y en el Museo MACA en el XIV Salón de Arte Visual.

Ha dirigido varios cortometrajes que han sido destacados en festivales internacionales de cine como el BAFICI y el FIDBA en su sección competitiva y seleccionada por Berlinale Talents BA como directora en 2018. En 2019 asistió al Curso de Teatro Biográfico – Documental en la UDK de Berlín con Gudrun Herrbold y recientemente fue seleccionada para participar como jurado en la Academia ELIA 2021 (Liga Europea de Institutos de las Artes).

Actualmente, estudia un maestría en cine documental en la Escuela de Arte LUCA como becaria, y trabaja en diferentes proyectos personales y por encargo.

Astroromántica

Las fotos que componen este proyecto titulado Astroromántica forman parte del detrás de escena de una video-instalación realizada por Luciana Malavolta, diseñadora y protagonista de la obra. Mi intención era fotografiar el proceso de rodaje tomando imágenes del entorno y de la protagonista en las pausas y cortes entre escenas.

Parte de estos paisajes son de la provincia de Mendoza, la zona montañosa que choca con los La Cordillera de los Andes. Esta serie de paisajes me inspiró a pensar en el espacio, en lugares habitados y alejados de la civilización. La idea de tener como protagonista a una mujer vestida de astronauta que lleva sobre sí misma una máquina que representa el latido de su deseo viajar por estos territorios, transmite la idea de una heroína alternativa, sensible y romántica.

Esta versión de fotografías en blanco y negro es un trabajo en curso que mezcla material analógico y digital de la expedición.
