February’s featured photographer is Clara de Tezanos

Co-founder and director of the Contemporay Centre of Photography, La Fototeca and the International Festival GuatePhoto. Clara, has been an important part of the promotion and the movement of contemporary photography in Guatemala and the region. She has dedicated to the management, curatorial works and teaching of photography.

Clara has produced curatorial projects in festivals such as, Dumbo Arts (NY), Pinyao International Photo Festival (China), Fototropía and GuatePhoto Festival. In addition, she has also directed the editorial content of the publications, Prisma & Nueva Generación (New Generation). She has also hold the position of jury and portfolio reviewer at FotoVisura Grant, Prix Pictet, Photolucida, Trasatlántica PhotoEspaña, Festival de La Luz y FotoFest.

Clara started her photographic career at a young age. She completed her studies and worked as a photography assistant in Paris. As an artist, she has taken part in many collective exhibitions in New York Photo Festival, Rencontres d´Arles (France), ESFOTO (El Salvador), Foto 30 (Guatemala), and has collaborated with J.J Estrada in the exhibitions COSMOS, ÁUREA and IMPLOSIÓN (Guatemala).

TODAS SOMOS MARIAS

This project was one of my first ghosts that came out to light as a first stimulus as a conscious creative process. I had the opportunity to live abroad for a few years and when I got back this need called as a shout for freedom. Analising the shock and ‘noise’ that my return caused on me, Todas Somos Marias, was fully created by anger that I felt in a moment of my life where it was important to define myself as a woman, a woman who can be independent, that one who is fulfilled and can enjoy by herself. During this time of selfdiscovery and definition of identity, it was important to me to address it.

I am the youngest of five siblings, of which 4 are women, four Maria’s – Maria Jimena, Maria Agustina, Maria Lia and myself, Maria Clara. The necessity that I had to portray these scenarios came from a question from my own name, my sister’s name and of the majority of women around me, in the Latin American region to have this name is very common.

I find imposing the tacit presence of Maria, the virgin, the ones that we carry her name as a symbol. I resolved this from my own spectrum, juxtaposing the roles assigned for being a woman in a upper middle-class in Latin America, the sensuality that as a woman we have inside, and the tacit presence of Maria, the virgin that we carry since birth, adding this way a rich religious charge almost contradictory.

La fotógrafa del mes de Febrero es Clara de Tezanos

Co-fundadora y Directora del Centro de Fotografía Contemporánea, La Fototeca y el Festival Internacional GuatePhoto. Clara ha sido una parte importante de la promoción y movimiento de la fotografía contemporánea en Guatemala y la región, dedicándose a la creación, gestión, curaduría y docencia de la fotografía.

Clara ha producido ensayos curatoriales en exposiciones dentro de festivales como Photoville, Dumbo Arts (NY), Pinyao International Photo Festival (China), Fototropía y el Festival GuatePhoto, también ha llevado la dirección editorial de las publicaciones de Prisma y Nueva Generación. Como jurado y revisor de portafolios ha participado en FotoVisura Grant, Prix Pictet, Photolucida, Trasatlántica PhotoEspaña, Festival de La Luz y FotoFest.

Clara inicia su carrera fotográfica a una temprana edad, realizando sus estudios y trabajando como asistente en Paris, Francia. Como artista ha participado en varias exposiciones colectivas como el New York Photo Festival, Rencontres d´Arles (Francia), ESFOTO (El Salvador), Foto 30 (Guatemala), y en colaboración con JJ Estrada T. en la exposición COSMOS (Galería Ana Lucía Gómez, Guatemala), ÁUREA (Museo de Arte Moderno Carlos Mérida, Guatemala) e IMPLOSIÓN (Fototropía).

Este proyecto fue uno de los primeros fantasmas que salieron a la luz ante mi primer estímulo de un proceso creativo consciente. Tuve la oportunidad de vivir afuera de mi país unos años y al regresar esta expresión aulló como un grito de libertad. Analizando el choque y ruido que me causo el escenario al que regresé, Todas Somos Marías fue totalmente impulsada por el enojo que sentí en una época de mi vida donde era importante definirme como mujer, una mujer que se valiera por si sola, aquella que es plena y que se goza a si misma. En estas épocas de autodescubrimiento y definición de identidad, me era importante canalizarlo de esta manera.

Soy la mas pequeña de cinco hermanos, de los cuales cuatro somos mujeres, cuatro Marías – María Jimena, María Agustina, María Lía y yo, María Clara. La necesidad que tuve de retratar estos escenarios resultaba venir de un cuestionamiento desde mi nombre, el de mis hermanas y el de la mayoría de mujeres a mi alrededor, en regiones latinoamericanas, llevar este nombre es muy común.

Me parece imponente la presencia tácita de María, la Virgen, en aquellas que llevamos su nombre como símbolo. Lo resolví desde mi espectro, yuxtaponiendo los roles asignados por ser mujer en una media-alta sociedad latinoamericana, la sensualidad que como mujer llevamos dentro, y la presencia tácita de María, la virgen que llevamos desde el nacimiento, agregándole así, una gran carga religiosa contradictoria.
