April’s featured photographer is Mónica Lozano
Monica Lozano is a Mexican-American photographer born in El Paso, Texas, and raised across the border in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico. Lozano received her Masters Degree in Photography at TAI, Centro Universitario de Artes in Madrid, Spain. Her work has been selected for various international photo competitions and grants.
In 2011, Lozano finished the Photo Global residency at the School of Visual Arts in New York on a presidential scholarship. Lozano’s elegant and socially charged portraits have been exhibited in Italy, Spain, Germany, France, Seoul, Indonesia, Portugal, Tunis, Chile, Greece, Morocco, Mexico and the United States.
Her work has been featured under the “One To Watch” article in American Photo Magazine and Columbia Journalism Review selected her for the “20 Women to Watch” list. In 2011, she collaborated with the TED Award winner JR and his Inside Out Project in Mexico where she coordinated and organised a massive action around the world called “Be The Change”, she was also featured in the Inside Out Movie at the 2013 Tribeca Film Festival. Lozano’s work was selected for the opening exhibition of Latin America’s first museum dedicated to photography and image founded by the Pedro Meyer Foundation in Mexico City.
Lozano is currently living in the border of Mexico and USA, teaching young students in different universities about photography and art as a way to transcend borders.
Borders
My work speaks about human condition in poignant places at difficult times. Interrogating on the theme of survival in borders around the world, I am interested in capturing stories that are a testament of courage. I am interested in capturing the man who is capable of doing anything in order to have a new life. The Borders series speaks about the immigrant who is capable of doing everything in order to construct a new life. Focusing in this moment of nothingness, where they have left their past, but have not arrived to the promised land, they are in the limit of two worlds. The reality is far away from what they think it will be, they are confronted with the unimaginable.

La fotógrafa del mes de Abril es Mónica Lozano
Mónica Lozano creció con doble ciudadania en la frontera de Ciudad Juárez, México y El Paso, Texas, Estados Unidos. Su trabajo está inspirado en historias verdaderas de personas que muestran valentía, determinación y fuerza, particularmente aquellas que han vivido experiencias difíciles en fronteras al rededor del mundo. En el 2009, Lozano se graduó de la maestría en fotografía, de la Escuela Universitaria de Artes y Espectáculos TAI en Madrid, España y es aquí en donde ella crea la serie fotográfica BORDERS.
En el 2011, Lozano se graduó de School of Visual Arts en Nueva York bajo el programa de residencia “Photo Global”. En este mismo año, fue elegida como “Talento a seguir” por la revista “American Photo Magazine” y en el 2012, Columbia Journalism Review la seleccionó como una de las “20 Mujeres a seguir”. Lozano realizó una colaboración masiva a nivel mundial con el artista francés JR ganador del premio TED 2011 y su proyecto “Inside Out”.
En el 2015, participó en la exposición de inauguración del Foto Museo Cuatro Caminos de la Fundación de Pedro Meyer. Su trabajo ha sido expuesto en países como México, Estados Unidos, España, Italia, Alemania, Francia, Grecia, Portugal, Tunisia, Marruecos, Seul, Chile, entre otros.
Actualmente, es profesora en la Universidad de Texas en El Paso y trabaja el tema de la fotografía y arte como formas de trascender fronteras.
Borders
Mi trabajo habla acerca de la condición humana en lugares peligrosos, interrogando sobre el tema de sobrevivencia en fronteras alrededor del mundo. Me interesa retratar a ese hombre en fuga que es capaz de hacer cualquier cosa por construir una nueva vida. Me pregunto de donde toman la fuerza los migrantes para atravesar fronteras alrededor del mundo. La serie Borders, habla de ese trance en la nada, en donde ya dejaron atrás su pasado y aun no llegan a su destino, están en el limite entre dos mundos, creyendo que llegaran a la tierra prometida. La realidad a la que se enfrentan es inimaginable.
