September’s featured photographer is Suwon Lee

(Caracas, 1977) In 2011, she was awarded the Armando Reverón Award to the Young Artist of the year by the Venezuelan Association of Plastic Artists; in 2010 she was the winner of the Emerging Artist Award granted by the International Association of Art Critics, Venezuelan Chapter. In 2009, she was the winner of the CIFO Miami grant and was included in the “Younger than Jesus Artist Directory” compiled by the New Museum of New York and Phaidon Press. Suwon has has an extensive number of solo and group shows in Venezuela and overseas. In addition, Suwon has been invited to international Biennials such as, “9ª Bienal Internacional de Arte Bolivia SIART” (2016); “9ª Bienal do Mercosul: Si el tiempo lo permite”, Porto Alegre, Brasil (2013); “Biennial of the Americas: Draft Urbanism”, Denver, Colorado, USA; “I Bienal Internacional de Arte Contemporáneo ULA 2010”, Mérida, Venezuela (2010);  “Don’t Trust. Wight Biennial”, UCLA Arts Department, USA (2006).

In 2013, she was artist-in-residence in Iceland at NES (Skagastrond) and Gullkistan (Laugarvatn). Between February and June 2017 she was artist-in-residency at Fundación Armando Alvares Penteado (FAAP) in São Paulo, Brazil.

She studied under Axel Hütte in his masterclass in Photoespaña (2006) followed by photo-trips in Latin America and Europe. In addition, Suwon continued her studies with Nelson Garrido in his experimental photography workshop in Caracas, Venezuela (2007).

Between 2006 and 2015 she was Co-founder and Co-Director of the contemporary art space Oficina #1 in Caracas, Venezuela.

Study of Light: Catatumbo

This project is a light study of a natural phenomenon occurring in Western Venezuela known as Catatumbo. “Relámpago del Catatumbo” (The Catatumbo’s Lightning) is a project occurred through one night for a period of four hours at the time in which glares from these thunderstorms occur.

Beyond the environmental and social impact that this phenomenon has, my intension is to reflect the lightning and pictorial qualities of the phenomenon as such, in relation to the landscape that works as a background. The qualities of the lightning are the features that have a major impact in the nearby population; not only work as a guide for the navigation, but also as a statement to the power of nature and its sublime character.

Inspired on traveling painters such as Ferdinand Bellerman and Anton Goering, in these sixteen photographs, I reveal intensities, luminosities and different contrasts, that turn even more dramatic due to the cloudiness at the time taken. All these elements create a complex lighting situation: the lightning isn’t shown in its maximum power, rather nuanced and veiled, consecuently creating a mysterious atmosphere.

La fotógrafa del mes de Septiembre es Suwon Lee

Suwon Lee (Caracas, 1977) En 2011 le fue otorgado el Premio Armando Reverón al Joven Artista de la Asociación Venezolana de Artistas Plásticos; en 2010 fue merecedora del Premio a Artista Emergente otorgado por Asociación Internacional de Críticos de Arte Capítulo Venezuela. En 2009 fue ganadora de la bolsa de trabajo del programa de Grants & Comissions de CIFO Miami y fue incluida en el Directorio de Artistas recopilado por el New Museum de Nueva York en el marco de la exposición colectiva “Younger than Jesus”. La obra de Suwon se ha expuesto extensamente en el territorio nacional e internacional. Asimismo, ha participado en bienales internacionales como “9ª Bienal Internacional de Arte Bolivia SIART” (2016); “9ª Bienal do Mercosul: Si el tiempo lo permite”, Porto Alegre, Brasil (2013); “Biennial of the Americas: Draft Urbanism”, Denver, Colorado, USA; “I Bienal Internacional de Arte Contemporáneo ULA 2010”, Mérida, Venezuela (2010);  “Don’t Trust. En 2013 realiza dos residencias artísticas en Islandia en NES (Skagastrond) y Gullkistan (Laugarvatn). Entre febrero y junio 2017 es artista en residencia de la Fundación Armando Alvares Penteado (FAAP) en Sao Paulo, Brasil.

Se forma con Axel Hütte en su Masterclass Photoespaña (2006) y durante los siguientes años realiza con éste varios foto-viajes en América Latina y Europa. En el 2007 estudia con Nelson Garrido en el Taller de fotografía experimental en Caracas, Venezuela.

Desde 2006 hasta 2015 es Co-fundadora y Co-directora del espacio de arte contemporáneo emergente Oficina #1 en Caracas, Venezuela.

Estudio de la Luz: Catatumbo

Esta pieza es un estudio de la luz del fenómeno natural en el oeste de Venezuela conocido como Catatumbo. El “Relámpago del Catatumbo”, realizado a lo largo de una noche por el período de cuatro horas al momento en que se suceden los fulgores de estas tormentas eléctricas.

Más allá del impacto ambiental y social que tiene este fenómeno, mi intención es reflejar las cualidades lumínicas y pictóricas del mismo en relación al paisaje que le sirve de fondo, por cuanto son estas cualidades las que mayor incidencia tienen sobre la población; sirven no solo como guía para la navegación sino como testimonio del poder de la naturaleza y su carácter sublime.

Inspirada en los pintores viajeros como Ferdinand Bellerman y Anton Goering, en las dieciséis tomas fotográficas, revelo intensidades, luminosidades y contrastes diferentes, que se tornan aún más dramáticos debido a la nubosidad. Todos estos elementos crean una situación lumínica compleja: el Relámpago no se muestra en su máxima potencia sino matizado y velado, creando una atmósfera misteriosa.
