Foto Féminas’ Library – María Cristina Orive – 1931-2017

María Cristina Orive leaves a great legacy and an example of culture production in her home country Guatemala and Latin America. Together with Sara Facio, María Cristina co-founded La Azotea, the first publishing house to print Latin American photo books in our region.

In 2015, I had the opportunity to meet her in person while exhibiting Foto Féminas at GuatePhoto festival in Antigua, Guatemala at Centro Cultural de la Cooperación Española. Although, Orive was in her 80s at the time, her curiosity for the projects exhibited, as well as the platform were of her great interest. I dedicated myself to listen to her questions and answer. Thankful for such a unique opportunity and exchange. Finally, after finishing the exhibition tour she asked me what were my objectives with Foto Féminas, and so María Cristina responded: ‘today everything is easier, but you must continue’.

I remain thankful to have met her in person after having read about her in books and articles. Pleased to have been heard about my dreams and visions, but above all, to have fulfilled my young spirit with a tenacious voice. Today, I would like to honor and celebrate her legacy by naming Foto Féminas’ library after her, María Cristina Orive.

Biblioteca Foto Féminas – María Cristina Orive – 1931 – 2017

María Cristina Orive deja un gran legado y un ejemplo de producción cultural en su país de origen Guatemala y en América Latina. Junto a Sara Facio, María Cristina co-fundó La Azotea, la primera editorial en imprimir foto libros y postales con artistas de la región Latinoamericana.

En el 2015, tuve la oportunidad de conocer a María Cristina en persona mientras se exponía la muestra de Foto Féminas en el festival de GuatePhoto en Antigua, Guatemala en el Centro de la Cooperación Española. A pesar que María Cristina estaba en sus 80 años al momento, su curiosidad por los proyectos expuestos y la plataforma prevalecían. Yo me dedique a escuchar y a responder a sus preguntas. Simplemente agradecida de este único intercambio. Finalmente, al terminar el tour de la exposición María Cristina me preguntó cuáles eran mis objetivos e incentivo con Foto Féminas, por lo cual, María Cristina me respondió: ‘hoy todo es más fácil, pero debes continuar’.

Quedo gratificada de haberle podido conocer en persona, luego de haberla leído en libros y artículos. Igualmente, agradecida por haber sido escuchada en mis sueños y visiones, pero sobre todo, por haber alimentado mi espíritu joven con su voz tenaz. Hoy, me gustaría honrarla y celebrar su legado en la fotografía latinoamericana nombrando nuestra joven biblioteca bajo su nombre, María Cristina Orive.
